House Paint FAQs
Do I have lead paint on my house?
According to The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), homes built before 1978 more than likely contain lead-based paint. You can get a testing kit to find out if your exterior paint has led in it before you start second guessing yourself.
What sheen of paint should I use?
There are three main sheens typically available for exterior surfaces and the type of surface will determine the level of sheen needed.
The types of sheens to be aware of and their best surfaces are flat, which works best with stucco; Low lustre, which is recommended with wood siding only if it is in good shape with minimal cosmetic blemishes, and Semi gloss. Low lustre trim elements should almost always be coated in a semi gloss sheen.
Unless you dislike shine, semi gloss provides the best amount of protection for the overall life of the product. It can resist dirt and can take a beating from sun and rain.
How should I protect my landscaping during the painting process?
Plants should get covered with lightweight materials. Some can be pulled back gently or get trimmed before the job begins to provide clearance.
Do you have to wash the house before painting?
It is a crucial step that can affect the quality of the job if not performed. Pre-washing removes grime and mildew and provides a clean surface for the primer, and provides the opportunity for any damage done to the home over time a chance to be repaired before paint is applied.
